As we enter the new decade, the EU has introduced tougher goals to achieve a net-zero economy for the bloc within the next three decades. The challenge is huge, as it rests on economic recovery and growth while minimising emissions.

BNEF forecasts that by 2050, wind and solar will account for the majority of the capacity mix in the large, industrialised economies of northern Europe, but suggests that sector coupling is going to require wind and solar in significant quantities, which could lead to 400% growth in capacity additions.

This will require the integration of once-distinct power, heating and fuel systems, which leverage electrolysers to produce clean hydrogen, as well as energy storage and more responsive loads, such as EV chargers, to create more flexibility within grids.
