The petrochemical industry is changing. More workers are projected to retire in the coming years; 10,000 Baby Boomers reach the age of 65 every day - a trend expected to continue until 2030. That in combination with industry fluctuations due to heavier, increasingly sour crude oil means it’s critical for today’s downstream oil and gas professionals to gain the knowledge needed to address ever-changing industry challenges.
For nearly 60 years, San Jacinto College (San Jac) has trained Greater Houston’s oil and gas students and professionals. Its four campuses throughout East Harris County serve as training hubs to the largest petrochemical manufacturing region in the United States. Through support of the Center for Petrochemical, Energy and Technology’s (CPET) new electrical training labs and glycol application area, Eaton makes clear our intent to support the competent power professionals of tomorrow, today.
The growth of the U.S. oil and gas industry is leading to an expansion in manufacturing and refining and increased employment opportunities for skilled positions. In the Texas Gulf Coast region alone, $40 billion in new projects have been announced, with 11,000 jobs required per year to satisfy petrochemical growth. But with more than 50 percent of the current employee base retiring over the next few years, a severe skills gap is projected.
Beyond oil and gas industry retirements, the landscape is changing thanks to rapid technology adoption. The next generation of oil and gas professionals must respond to technologies old and new—operating, diagnosing, repairing and maintaining systems installed decades ago in addition to designing and implementing next-level operations technologies.
Eaton is dedicated to helping to fill the candidate pipeline with more qualified, certified workers and is proud to have donated over $2 million in support of CPET, the largest petrochemical training facility along the Texas Gulf Coast.
