Is your vehicle the next energy ecosystem?
Matt Nolan, global product strategy manager for eMobility, and Fabrice Roudet, head of energy storage and EV charging, talk about how the industry is preparing for the next wave of eMobility expansion.
Vehicle as a Grid: plug in to open new possibilities for mobility
Our Vehicle as a Grid approach leverages and connects the entire EV ecosystem to optimize energy use. It starts with our eMobility solutions that improve electrical efficiency and safety in EVs—boosting range, improving performance and ensuring protection. And it leverages our electrical solutions that have forged the backbone of safe, reliable electricity supply and infrastructure for more than a century.
With our Vehicle as a Grid approach, we see electric vehicles as much more than users of power. They can become a source of power for homes and other energy loads. And we’re working to expand the capabilities of vehicle electrical systems and drive technology advancements that support more resilient and flexible energy systems.
In development now, this strategy will put vehicle and energy infrastructure to work in new ways to help address future energy needs—in the vehicle, on the grid, at home and even on the road.
Our Vehicle as a Grid approach is part of a broad strategy to simplify the energy transition, and we have the advantage of seeing the entire system. We’re helping customers add more renewables, energy storage and electric vehicle charging in their homes, communities, commercial and industrial buildings and on the grid. We have a proven history of managing, controlling and converting power throughout the vehicle. Combining this deep electrical and vehicle expertise, we’re transforming infrastructure and transportation to solve new challenges and accelerate a low-carbon future.
Here’s what’s coming in our Vehicle as a Grid approach:
Maintain power at home and buildings during grid outages: Vehicle-to-home (V2H) leverages your vehicle battery to power essential needs. The increasing frequency and impact of power outages makes a backup energy source a lifesaver when the grid is down.
Support the electric grid when demand peaks: Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) puts EVs to work, returning energy stored in batteries to the grid. So utilities have another tool to balance electricity supply and demand during peak periods.
Transfer power to other vehicles in a pinch: Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) charging enables flexibility to recharge anywhere—simply by plugging into another EV.
Power whatever you need, whenever you need: Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) uses stored power in vehicles to sustainably provide vital energy during an emergency or wherever the electric grid is remote or doesn’t exist—on a camping trip, at an industrial site or anywhere in between.
As the energy transition advances, we're helping companies and communities around the world simplify their energy systems and safely transition to the low-carbon future.
