  • 2023 NEC® nominal discharge compliant whole-home surge protection

Blue skies? Power surges can still strike

While nearby storms are a common cause of surges, they aren’t the only source. In fact, NEMA® estimates that up to 80% of power surges come from inside the home. You wouldn’t give a second thought to these potential surge sources, including:

  • Home appliances that frequently turn off and on, like air conditioners and refrigerators
  • Small power surges that happen frequently
  • Your utility from electrical grid issues, downed power lines or power restoration actives

They can all disrupt the electrical system and invite unwelcome surges.

80% of power surges come from inside the home.

The NEC and surge protection requirements

The 2020 NEC introduced a new article related to surge protection, Article 230.67, which mandates that all services supplying dwelling units must include a surge protective device (SPD), either integrated into the equipment or installed immediately adjacent to it. The SPD must be a Type 1 or Type 2 device. This requirement also applies to the replacement of residential service equipment.

The 2023 NEC has expanded on Article 230.67 from the 2020 NEC. In addition to dwelling units, the 2023 NEC now requires SPDs in dormitory units, guest rooms, and guest suites of hotels and motels, as well as patient sleeping rooms in nursing homes and limited-care facilities.

The 2023 NEC also added the requirement that SPDs must have a minimum 10kA nominal discharge current rating. Eaton’s surge protection modules, breakers and bricks now support this minimum requirement.
