Functional safety is an essential part of the design process for machines because it is key to protecting the well-being of the machine operator and to keeping production up and running. To ensure functional safety, the latest standards have to be applied, and design guidelines based on standardised circuits help to make implementation significantly easier.

For more than 10 years, DIN EN 60204-1 has ensured the safety of the electrical equipment of machines and systems. While the underlying IEC 60204-1 standard was already updated in 2016, the European version of the world’s most widely used machine safety standard has now also been published. This white paper provides an overview of the most important changes for machine builders and system integrators, especially with regard to switchgear technology.
