Which type of UPS should you use and why?

Servers are a crucial piece of IT equipment that should be protected against both outages and power quality issues such as sags and surges. For this purpose, we recommend the Eaton 5P UPS or Eaton 5PX Gen 2 (the ‘X’ stands for extended batteries), whose wide range of power ratings, clear notifications, advanced LCD and optional connectivity make it ideal for protecting professional equipment.

While security systems are frequently battery-powered, you can connect them to a UPS for an additional layer of protection. With their extended battery runtime, either the Eaton 5PX Gen 2 is the ideal choice for backing up connected equipment, such as power over Ethernet (PoE) switches or systems used for storing security camera footage.

In smaller offices, the ideal choice for protecting modern Internet Protocol (IP) telephone systems is the Eaton Ellipse ECO, an extra-flat model with an integrated, high-performance UPS surge protection device. For larger, more demanding office environments, the Eaton 5P or the Eaton 5PX Gen 2 with extended battery modules are your go-to options.

We have developed the Eaton Ellipse PRO specifically for protecting computer equipment – it offers the right level of UPS surge protection for workstations and the associated accessories and comes with standard sockets rather than IEC connectors. A line-interactive UPS, meaning voltage fluctuations are automatically corrected, it features an LCD for real-time status updates.

To protect devices such as routers, switches and Wi-Fi access points, which in offices are often located under a suspended ceiling, we recommend the Eaton Ellipse ECO, a slim-line model UPS with high-performance surge-protection built in. Thanks to its EcoControl function, it offers significant energy savings compared to previous-generation models.

Lifts are perhaps one of the most obvious use cases for a UPS, irrespective of their location. In the event of a power cut, the connected UPS system will prevent people from getting stuck (or worse). Since the associated loads may be quite large, we recommend a more powerful UPS, such as the Eaton 9SX or 9PX with advanced protection for this purpose.
